UPDATE:  County Commission Meeting

For those of you who were not able to attend the Miami Dade County Commission meeting today, we were successful in keeping the resolution from passing.  It was a long and drama-filled meeting with very high tension, but in the end the Chairman Bruno Barreiro agreed that this issue was much to complicated to vote on without any studies or analysis have been done.  The bad news is the issue has not gone away forever.  It has been deferred to “some time in the future” but could come back up as early as September 2nd.  If it is back on the Agenda on Sept 2nd it could still be placed on the November ballot.  We will continue working on this and keep you informed of any changes.

I would like to thank those members that attended.  Though we had over 100 members present, it was a bit embarrassing considering that we have over 600 members.  If you speak to anyone who attended you will get a feeling of how ugly today could have been had we not made a statement with our attendance in numbers.  We were almost outnumbered by Miami Dade County and that would have been very sad.

As we all know sometimes mergers and consolidations are inevitable, but my view on this is that it must be well thought out and accepted by both sides.  A surprise “back door” maneuver like this is reckless, and does not ensure that our best interests and that of our residents are being protected.

Special thanks to the City Commissioners for their support and lobbying the County Commission, and in particular those City officials that were present and spoke on our behalf: Chairman Joe Sanchez, Commissioner Marc Sarnoff, Chief Bryson, Chip Iglesias and the only County commissioner that really stuck up for us, our retired Fire Chief Commissioner Carlos Gimenez.

The video will be available later today at the following link:  Board of County Commissioners Charter Review Workshop

I look forward to seeing you all at our DROP ratification meetings on Monday and Tuesday night 7pm.

Fraternally,

Robert
