Grievance

A grievance can be briefly described as “a complaint”. Typically based on the belief that “something” was violated.

You must inform your supervisor of your grievance within 7 days from when that “situation” occurred, or when you were made aware of it.

Notifying your Union Rep. is necessary, and notifying your supervisor within the 7 days is CRITICAL!! Document it in the Station Log book.

If you’re not sure that what occurred is a violation and worthy of a Grievance, talk your Union Rep. before ignoring it.

It is not your responsibility to identify the contract language or policy that you feel was violated against you. That’s the Grievance Committee’s job.

Golden Rule: Obey first, Grieve later! You may voice your displeasure with your supervisor, but don’t complicate the issue by allowing yourself to be accused of disobeying a direct order (“Insubordination”).

If you are unsure about the situation discuss it with someone you trust, particularly a Union Rep, but don’t ignore it.

When notifying your Union, try to notify your Shift Rep first then if unable to reach him/her make contact with another Union Rep that is working that day or your Union Office 306-633-3442
